October, 1916 was the start of the first streetcar operating along the "loop" line that circled the Iowa State College campus. The Interurban line of the Des Moines, Fort Dodge and Southern Railroad began operating in Ames in 1907. Streetcar in this photo is headed to Des Moines along what is today (1991) the exit drive from the Memorial Union parking ramp. (See also: 130.712.1)
