The mill in this photograph was misidentified in Gladys Meads's book "At the Squaw and the Skunk," 1955, p. 7, as Soper's Mill in Story County. Dale Hughes, originally from Milford Township, Story County, accepted Meads's identification and included this photograph as Sopher's Mill in his book, "Milford Township and Proud of it," 2007, p. 54. However, later research led him to identify this photograph as the Stanley Mill, Albion, Iowa, in Marshall County. Even the Ames Historical Society identified this photograph as Soper's Mill in its Summer, 2007, newsletter article, "Images of Soper's Mill," p.2. For a full explanation of Dale Hughes's research and the historical society's retraction of its previous identification, see p. 5 in the Spring, 2008, Ames Historical Society's newsletter. Hughes will correct this more-than-fifty-year-old mistake in the new edition of his book.
