Putting practice on the green located near the intersection of Lincoln Way and Beach on the Iowa State College campus on September 17, 1916. Win Tilden, head of the ISC Women's Physical Education program, is third from the left. She is giving each young woman suggestions on how to hold the putter, how to stand, and how to concentrate on the direction the ball will go. Note what appear to be golf balls around the outer section of the green; apparently, each young lady is taking a turn "holing out." In this photo, you are looking east; the trees in the background are on north side of Lincoln Way at the Beach corner. Wallace Road did not yet exist; Lincoln Way was a two-lane gravel road. Note the portable pig shelters north of the trees, where today [2000] high-rise dormitories stand. Photo was taken by F. E. Colburn, official ISC photographer.
