Frederick Clark Tilden was born Nov. 16, 1846, the sixth of the eight children of Julius Clark Tilden and Eliza M. Briggs Tilden, in Rochester, Vermont. Fred Tilden served in Company M of the 11th Vermont Infantry in the Civil War. In 1867 he mirgrated to Ames, Iowa, with his father Julius, who by that time was a widower. On Nov. 26, 1868, Fred Tilden married Emma Albrook of Delaware County, Iowa. They engaged in farming for a period of years north of Ames. He also worked as an insurance salesman for a time. Fred Tilden later operated a drug store in Ames in a partnership with his nephew Bert McLain. He was also part-owner of the Tilden Grocery Store. The Tilden Store Company in Ames was founded by his older brother George Galen Tilden who moved to Ames in 1869. George Galen Tilden was the maternal grandfather of Farwell T. Brown (and Fred Tilden was his great-uncle). This cartoon likeness of Fred Tilden appeared as part of a series, "Our Men of Affairs," in the 1917 "Ames Evening Times."
