Standing on the Iowa State College campus looking east. The hill on which the crowd is standing is near what is now Iowa State University's Music Hall. The frame building on the hill opposite was the Sanitary Building. Built in 1884-85, it housed in its time various parts of the college. Originally it served as the college hospital and was served by Dr. Harriman (1895-1907) and Dr. Tilden (1907-1919). The hospital facilities were located on the second floor with the first floor allocated for use by the Veterinary Department. In 1893, the Veterinary Department was moved to Agriculture Hall and the Sanitary Building was used exclusively as a hospital. In 1912, when South Hall burned, the Music Dept. was moved to this building and it became Music Hall until 1927 it was razed for the construction of the Memorial Union on the site. The writing on this photo says "Cavalry at Ames" and probably shows the ISC Student Army Training Corps in parade.
