Photographic portrait of Archie Martin, Jr., son of and Nancy C. and Archie A. Martin. The Martins were a pioneer African-American family in Ames. Archie, Sr., with the aid of his grown sons built on Lincoln Way a house which became a central focus for the small African-American community in Ames and the surrounding area from the 1920s through the 1950s. The Martins provided housing for students of color who found barriers to their living in the residence halls on the campus of Iowa State College. Archie Martin, Jr., later made his home in Des Moines.
