Drivers are standing at attention beside their military ambulances in this 1918 photograph taken outside the hospital barracks at Camp Dodge northwest of Des Moines during World War I. The ambulances were Model-T Ford trucks. Note the Red Cross banner in the right of the photo. The 1918 pandemic influenza epidemic kept these drivers busy and the hospital barracks filled to capacity.
