Gilbert Consolidated School's horse-drawn buses are shown lined up on road by school building (see: 53.263A.4 etc.) in November, 1920. Ralph Miller, an Ames resident in 1990, was the driver of bus to the far left. In the mid-1920s motorized buses were acquired in the area. Miller's horses were named Tony (black) and Major (white). This is part of a panoramic photograph (See: 51.254.1-2, 51.254.3-5, 51.255.1-4, and 99.537.1-3) which also shows all the school children posing in front of the new Gilbert Consolidated School building. (The date of November 11, 1920, and V. A. Helfanstein, the Superintendent of the Gilbert Schools at the time, are printed on the photograph. The photographer is listed as the Habard-Showers Co. of Des Moines, Iowa) (See also: 53.263B.4; 89.469.1,4-5)
