Proceeding east on Osborn Drive on the Iowa State College campus in the spring of 1922 are two flatbeds pulled by an early tractor, the Bates Steel Mule, during ISC's first VEISHEA parade. The "float" is sponsored by the education department and shows a mock classroom with a male teacher and students, including one sitting on a tall stool and wearing a dunce cap. Chemistry Hall (renamed Gilman Hall in June, 1973 to honor Professor Henry Gilman) is prominent in the center of the photograph. Chemistry Hall was built in 1913. This 1922 photograph shows the building prior to its remodeling in 1954, 1956, and 1960 and without its 1963-64 addition. In the left of the photograph is the Hub which served as the campus depot first for the Dinkey (Ames and College Railroad) and then for the interurban railroad/streetcar.
