W. Craig Stephenson on the left, a manager at the Tilden Store on Main Street, from 1910 into the 1930s. He came to Ames from the Marshall Fields Department Store in Chicago to become a partner in the Tilden retail enterprises and was a manager at the store for around twenty-five years. The woman in the photograph was an employee of the store named Judy (last name unknown). The photograph was taken in around 1925 on the sidewalk in front of the store which was on the north side of Main Street. Visible over Stephenson's shoulder is the clock on the Union National Bank on the corner of Douglas Avenue and Main Street. Stephenson lived at 916 Clark Avenue and later at 1101 Blackwood Circle. He opened a fabric store, called Stephenson's Dry Goods Company, at 2428 Lincoln Way in campustown with his son Conrad. That store operated from the mid-1920s through 1981. (See also: 177.992.1)
