Carl Fritz Henning was the first park custodian of The Ledges, appointed in 1921. The Ledges was proposed as a state park as early as 1914. In 1924, it officially became Iowa's first state park. Henning was a naturalist and when campers, such as the Boy Scouts, stayed in the park, he could be counted upon to come by with stories and information about the park. The date of the photograph is uncertain and the identity of the boy with Henning is not known.
