When Margaret Hall was destroyed by fire on April 8, 1938, the women of Iowa State College lost their gymnasium, most of their equipment, and their swimming pool. Gaynold Carroll, from Des Moines, a journalism major, class of 1940, was one of the three coeds who carried petitions, signed by over 1,000 ISC women, to the Iowa General Assembly to convince the legislators to approve appropriations for a women's gymnasium on campus.
