On January 1, 1942, a major blizzard hit Ames. The "Life" magazine issue of January 19th reported 24 inches of snow fell within 24 hours. The article displayed two pages of pictures taken by the magazine's photographer who had been snowbound in Ames. This photo, taken by Ames resident Con Wendell, after the day of the blizzard, shows how Main Street in downtown Ames looked.
