The Army-Navy "E" banner awarded to Iowa State College on October 12, 1945 for "excellence" in the production of war materials made possible through metallurgy research at the school. Complete secrecy of the work was crucial and so the award could not be presented until the war had ended when the full nature of the work could be made public. Key people in the project who were honored that day included Dr. Frank Spedding, project director; Dr. Harley Wilhelm, associate director, Dr. C.V. Gray, chemist in charge of metal castings; and Dr. W. H. Keller, chemist in charge of chemical metallurgy. Holding the banner are, from left, Major General L.R. Groves and Cecil Finch. Iowa State College president, Charles E. Friley is seated behind the banner. (Photo courtesy of Materials Science & Metallurgical Engineering Department, Iowa State University.
