Photograph of Ray C. Cunningham, on the right, with an unidentified friend after hunting in South Dakota. Cunningham was born July 14, 1893, in Spink County, South Dakota. He was a graduate of South Dakota State College. He served as a commissioned officer in World War I. From 1919-1926 he was asst. secretary of YMCA at the University of Minnesota; from 1926-1953 he was general secretary of the YMCA at Iowa State College. He retired from Iowa State in 1953. He then served on the Ames School Board and the city playground commission. From 1959-1964, Cunningham was the Story County representative (Republican) to the Iowa legislature. During his tenure, he served on the powerful appropriations committee and in that time two new schools in Ames were funded by the state. Cunningham was married to Ethel Hutchinson (5/11/1918) and was the father of two sons and two daughters. His sons, Glen and Wayne, were commissioned officers in World II and both were killed in action. See also: 96.519.6
