Artesian water flowing out of a pipe from a well located north of Ames. The photograph was taken some time in the 1950s. This artesian well was off of U.S. Highway 69, about two and a half miles south of Story City. The well was eventually covered over, probably because of road congestion caused by people stopping to fill their containers with water. Artesian well water from this area once fed the popular Lake Comar. For the story of Lake Comar and its artesian waters, see chapter 24 in "Ames the Early Years in Word and Picture: From Marsh to Modern City," by Farwell Tilden Brown, 1993.
