Philip J. Walter, age 67, in his drug store at 217 Main Street in April, 1959. Walter was born September 29, 1892, in Bloechem, Austria, and came to the United States in 1900. He grew up in Menno, South Dakota, attended Wartburg College, and graduated from Highland Park College in Des Moines, Iowa. Walter was a pharmacist in the Medical Corps in France during World War I. He was the owner and operator of Walter Rexall Drug for 55 years, right up until his death on January 11, 1974, at the age of 81. Walter was very active in the Ames community, was a member of First United Methodist Church, and also was a member of many professional and service organizations. After his death, the drug store's building became an addition to Emerhoff's Footwear (215 Main Street).
