Celina Beranger Brekke and Jacob Brekke, perhaps after they had returned to Nevada, Iowa, in 1966 from Franklin County, Iowa. They retired from farming and moved back to where they had begun their marriage in 1909. Celina had ridden the orphan train from New York City in 1900 at the age of 10 to start a new life in the midwest. She was first placed with a family in Illinois, but after a brief period, was taken from that family because they mistreated her. She then travelled to Roland, Iowa, where she lived with serveral families as a foster child, finally staying with an elderly couple south of Ames until she was 18. She married Jacob when she was 19 and they had a long marriage which produced seven children. For Celina's orphan train story, see Appendix B, written by Carol Kenealy, in "Ames in Word and Picture; Book Three: Tales from Two Old-Timers," 2003.
