In late 1957, Ames attorney Joseph H. Buchanan and his wife, Garth R. Buchanan, bought the Lake Comar property where they lived for many years. They used the property to raise Arabian horses. This structure was once a skating rink at Lake Comar, which was a popular recreational area from 1914 into the early 1940s and was located about eight miles north of Ames and two miles south of Story City. One mile east of Highway 69, it lay in the east half of section 26 of Lafayette Township. The Buchanans sold their horses in both the United States and Canada, and Joe Buchanan told Farwell Brown that each horse they sold bore the first name "Comar."
