When the Ames City Hall (Municipal Building at Fifth Street and Kellogg Avenue) was bombed on May 22, 1970, Ames Police Sgt. Terry Bird was off duty. When word reached him of the bombing, he rushed to the station, located in the building. Here he is shown checking the damage to office communications. The explosion occurred in the window well next to the desk shown in this photograph, trashing almost everything in the vicinity of the blast. No one was killed in the attack, but serveral were injured. The perpetrators were never apprehended.
