The cinder path east of Elwood Drive between Squaw Creek and Iowa State University campus, looking east in 1974. Railroad tracks can be seen in the center of the photograph. The tracks were originally used for streetcars coming to campus from the central city. Later the tracks were used by the Chicago & North Western Railway to bring coal cars to the university's power plant. The cinder path was established in about 1905 or 1906 and was a very popular access for students walking from central Ames out to the campus. Note the sign in the foreground of the photo: "PEDESTRIANS ONLY; BICYCISTS [sic] USE SIXTH STREET BIKE PATH"
