Backbone State Park, established in the 1920s in northeast Iowa, northwest of Manchester, near Strawberry Point. Photo shows the residence of the park caretaker. The park is the largest state park in Iowa and was originally called The Devil's Backbone State Park. Professor Louis Hermann Pammel of Iowa State College was instrumental in the establishment of this park and, indeed, of the state park system in Iowa.
