The lake at Backbone State Park. The photograph was taken by Farwell Brown during a 1985 vacation when he and his wife stayed in one of the tourist cabins next to the lake. The lake was formed by damming the Maquoketa River which runs through the park. The lake is now [2001] closed to swimmers because of pollution.
