Clarice (Mathre) Flattebo - shown here in her Story City residence in 1986 - was one of the two little girls involved in the crash of Walter Harriman's Curtiss biplane during a "pleasure flight" on August 3, 1919 at the J. E. Arnold Field in Ames. Seven-year-old Clarice and her eight-year-old cousin Leota Amlund were sitting on a fence viewing the flight when Harriman's plane crashed into them. Leota was killed instantly; Clarice was severely injured. (See also: 101.551.2)
