Clarice (Mathre) Flattebo - shown here with her husband Severin in their Story City residence in 1986 - was one of the two little girls involved in the crash of Walter Harriman's Curtiss biplane during a "pleasure flight" on August 3, 1919 at the J. E. Arnold Field in Ames. Seven-year-old Clarice and her eight-year-old cousin Leota Amlund were sitting on a fence viewing the flights when Harriman's plane crashed into them. leota was killed instantly; Clarice was severely injured.
