This bell was given to the Congregatonal church in Ames by Oakes Ames to honor the first church constructed in the town that had been named after him. Cast in 1866 by Henry Hopper & Co. of Boston (Massachusetts), it is 43 inches in diameter, 27 inches high, 29 inches at the base, and 15 inches at the curve. It is still (2002) in use at the church, the United Church of Christ, Congregational, at the church's original location on the northeast corner of Sixth Street and Kellogg Avenue. The photo was taken on December 2, 1988, by Steve Lekwa. (Other photographs of the bell: 115.632.1;115.633.1-4; and 115.634.1-2,4)
