Audience and media staff await the arrival of William J. Bennett, who was the "national drug czar" during the administration of President George Herbert Walker Bush . Bennett was to speak at the Youth Recovery House on Kellogg Avenue. The woman in the center of this photograph with her head turned in profile is Karol Crosbie, who worked for Youth & Shelter Services (YSS), the parent agency of the Youth Recovery House. The man in sunglasses facing the camera is Don Randall, who was the director of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Agriculture Research division in Ames. Early in the 1980s, YSS took on administrative responsibilities in Story County for the "aftercare" of adolescents who had been treated for alcholol and drug addiction. Up to this time, adolescent chemical dependency had been largely unrecognized and undiagnosed. YSS continues to operate Iowa's largest such program [information taken from "YSS; a History of the Early Years, 1976-2001].
