National Drug Czar William J. Bennett is shown in the center of the photograph, standing on the far side of the white vehicle. Other people in the photograph are media personnel and Secret Service agents. Bennett was in Ames on October 10, 1989, with part of Iowa's congressional delegation visiting various parts of Youth & Shelter Services (YSS). He stopped at the Youth Recovery House to talk with the ten residents of that YSS facility, to talk to an assembly of about 150 people, and to participate in a reception held on the grounds of the house (804 Kellogg Avenue). Youth Recovery House is a YSS facility which provides care and counseling for adolescents who are recovering from chemical addiction.
