Media personnel and audience members milling about on the grounds of Youth & Shelter Services' Youth Recovery House at 804 Kellogg Avenue in Ames on October 10, 1989. They had just listened to the words of the National Drug Czar, William J. Bennett. This shows the side of the house with the tent canopy on the right set up for Bennett's reception. Bennett, who was appointed by President George H. W. Bush to coordinate the U.S. drug strategy, visited YSS accompanied by U.S. (Iowa) Congressman Neal Smith and U.S. (Iowa) Senator Charles Grassley. In a closed session at the Youth Recovery House, Mr. Bennett met with ten recovering teens who described to him how they had been introduced to drugs at early ages by family members.
