The pavilion in Herman Park in Boone, Iowa, is an outdoor venue for performances and band concerts. It was built in the days of Chautauqua, probably around 1920 since the land for the park was deeded to the city of Boone in 1918, and is very similar in appearance to the Chautauqua auditorium which once stood in Ames in what was to become part of the Municipal Cemetery (see 23.114.3 and 47.233.4). Herman's pavilion was always an open-air auditorium and once had a stage on one end where performances, very much like Chautauqua programs, were held even though Herman's pavilion was never an official Chautauqua site. Around 1984, a concrete floor and platform for the band was added. Since 1992, the Iowa Municipal Band Festival is held in the pavilion on the second Saturday in July. "The Herman Pavilion March," was composed to honor both the festival and its venue. Another outdoor auditorium also stands in Red Oak, Iowa, in which programs very similar to those of the old Chautauqua are still held.
