Sixth Street was constructed under the old Chicago & North Western Railroad tracks using this underpass, which was built in 1900 to serve as a flood drainage structure. When Squaw Creek was at flood stage, this structure allowed floodwaters to escape, taking the pressure off the main creek bridge and the railroad's elevated right-of-way. This photo was taken in 1995 and Willow Hall, on the Iowa State University campus at Lincoln Way, is visible through the underpass.
