Two derelict buildings in the town of Arlington in Fayette County in northeast Iowa. The garage no longer has gas pumps. Beyond the garage on the right is the brick schoolhouse that replaced the original building that burned in 1921. The Arlington school is now part of a consolidated system which serves the towns of Strawberry Point, Arlington, and Lamont. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the small towns of Iowa were vibrant places. In 1920, Arlington had a population of around 1,000 with many of its own services and businesses. In 2004, Arlington's population was 465. Farwell Brown's physician uncle, Gates Brown, and his family lived in Arlington from 1905 to 1917. For more information on Dr. Gates Brown and Arlington, see pp. 21-27 in "Ames in Word and Picture; Book Three: Tales from Two Old-Timers," by Farwell T. Brown and Kendrick W. Brown, 2003.
