Small Talk Reading List: Week 1
Parent/Child Relationships or Family Focus
0-6 months:
Our Alaska Family
(This book could be used for any age. It is a great way to introduce diversity among children)
A wordless picture book that shows pictures of different children on each page. Would be a great diverse book to present to young children to introduce the idea of diversity, and noticing that everyone can look different.
I Love You for You by Karen Wagner
Cute book that features animals wanting to be something different, but their parent telling them that they love them for who they are. This book has a lot of rhyming words, so would be fun for kids to listen to and look at the wonderful illustrations. The book ends with a mother reading the book to the son and talking about how much they love each other, and love them for how they are.
6-12 Months:
Mommy Do You Love Me?
Cute book that shows different babies/toddlers asking Mommy if they will help them with certain things. The book ends with the baby saying “I know you will always be there for me”. Great book to introduce diversity between children, and to snuggle up and read with Mommy.
Daddy Do You Love Me?
Very similar to “Mommy Do You Love Me?” shows different children wanting to do different activities with their father, and then ends with father and child talking about how they love each other. A great book to read as a Father and child.
12-24 Months:
Daddy, Papa, and Me by Leslea Newman
Great book that shows a family life with two dads, and a son. The book outlines various activities that the family does together. This would be a great book to show that there are various family types that could be different or similar to your own.
My New Baby illustrated by Rachel Fuller
Short story about a child who gets a new little brother or sister, and about what family life is now about, and how things are different. Great book for children who may be expecting a little sibling soon, and what their life may now look like.
