Math Spatial Words (up, down, high, low, across, before, between)
0-6 Months:
- Skippyjon Jones Up and Down by Judy Schachner
This board book features an adorable cat, Skippyjon Jones and how he bounces up, then down, then goes near and far. This book is very short and does not have a lot to it, but it would be a great book to introduce some spatial words to your young one.
- Where is Baby’s Pumpkin? by Karen Katz
In this lift the flap book, the baby in the story is looking for her pumpkin. Each page is a flap you can lift, so babies would have a lot to play with. The baby looks behind, under, below, etc. to find her pumpkin.
6-12 Months:
- Busy Garden by Campbell Books
In this interactive board book, babies can maneuver different things on each page. One of the pages talks about the baby flying up high and down low, so this would be a good way to introduce spatial words to children. Each page includes colorful illustrations that will interest your baby.
- Busy Fire Station by Campbell Books
This is another interactive board book where children can maneuver something different on each page. It features a fire station and describes what they have to do to go about their day, like going down the pole, climbing up and down the ladder, etc. This would be a great and fun book to introduce math spatial words to children.
12-24 Months:
- Before I Go to Sleep by Ronne Randall
This board book features a more real looking mother and child. The baby is talking about what they do before they go to sleep. Each page mentions the word ‘before’ so it is a great way to introduce the spatial word of ‘before’. The book also features words like across as well.
- The Hueys in What’s the Opposite by Oliver Jeffers
Each page in this book features different opposite words and some consist of math spatial words like up, down, high, low, here, there, etc. Each page includes a lot of white space with a simple, colorful illustrations.
