Rooted in Success: Celebrating National Seed Swap Day
by Alissa Dornink
Most people think of libraries as quiet places filled with books, but we are proving they are also places where community roots (literally) take hold. Every year, on the last Saturday in January, gardeners across the country celebrate National Seed Swap Day. This year, Ames Public Library is hosting a Seed Giveaway on Saturday, January 31, from 3-5pm. The aim is to help folks prepare for the upcoming spring season, as far away as that may seem, while learning about the importance of sustainability.
One of the resources at the Seed Giveaway will be the Ames Seed Library. Usually located upstairs near the Library’s Adults Services Desk, the Ames Seed Library is a community resource that provides free seeds for vegetables, flowers, fruits, and herbs. The primary goal of this program is to empower community members by giving them the tools to grow their own food. Having the ability to plant a garden in your backyard or a community plot is a major step toward independence and healthy living in a world where groceries can be expensive.
Ames Seed Library seeds will be available during the Seed Giveaway event, and we encourage you to bring any extra seeds you have at home to donate and share. This keeps the collection diverse and prevents good seeds from going to waste. It is a great example of a community of practice, where neighbors share their successes and resources to help everyone succeed.
This event is far from a solo project; it is a collaborative effort that highlights the power of teamwork. We have partnered with several expert organizations, including the Iowa State University Extension Master Gardeners, Mustard Seed Community Farm, and the Ames Repair Café. Together, these groups provide more than just seeds, they offer a wealth of knowledge on sustainability and how to garden responsibly.
Ultimately, National Seed Swap Day (and our Seed Giveaway) is about more than just plants; it is about building relationships. Whether you are a master gardener or a complete beginner, this event is a chance to connect with others who care about the planet. By sharing seeds and advice, we are growing more than just food, we are growing a sense of belonging and a commitment to a shared, sustainable future.
