Spring Break @ Your Library
by Brianne Anderson
One of the things I love about working at Ames Public Library is that my job is never the same two days straight. I get to meet new people, read new books, and plan new events all the time. That variety is what makes a community library so incredibly special. If you need a variety of things to keep your family entertained this Spring Break, look no further than your library!
One amazing program coming up soon at the Library is Opera Iowa’s free performance of “The Billy Goats Gruff” on Saturday, March 14. Opera is one of those art forms that many people know about but don’t often have an opportunity to experience live. Thanks to the local Ames Guild of the Des Moines Metro Opera, kids and families (and anyone else who wants to attend!) can see a live opera at the library. This year’s show features three little billy goats who encounter a steep bridge, a mean troll and a sticky situation that they must try to solve—and all set to some of the greatest classical music by Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti. The show is at 3:00pm and light refreshments will be served.
Have bored teens? Bring them to the library’s teen space on Thursday, March 20, for an afternoon of crafting and cupcakes. They can explore the teen space’s craft boxes and make their own rubber stamps, Kandi bracelets, and more. All supplies (and treats) provided. Teens can also pick up a copy of the Book vs. Movie book club selection for this month, “White Bird” by R.J. Palacio. The Book vs. Movie program spans two weeks with a book discussion on the third Friday of the month, and then watching the movie to compare on the fourth Friday of the month. Come to either or both!
Spring Break is also a great time to get out of the house and explore. Since the weather in Iowa is unpredictable in March, why not do some of that exploring at local museums and science centers—for free! Use your library card to check out an Adventure Pass to area attractions like the Des Moines Science Center, Blank Park Zoo, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, and so many more. Each pass gets a family in for free on the designated. There are a limited number of passes available, so reserve yours early!
