Watch a recording of On Golden Wings: The Greatest Story Never Told, an interactive living history play about the life of James Herman Banning. Banning was the first African American to fly across the Continental United States and the first to receive a US Department of Commerce pilot’s license.

Written and directed by Louisa Jaggar & Kevin Mambo, the play was performed during the 2023 Juneteenth celebration in conjunction with the renaming of the Ames Airport in honor of Banning. Participants can enjoy a piece of birthday cake with us after the video.

Presented in partnership with Ames Public Library, the Ames Branch of the NAACP, and Ames History Museum and with support from the Ames Public Library Friends Foundation.
