Join League of Women Voters for a free presentation by education professional Joanne Tubbs.
This discussion explores the complex and evolving landscape of free speech within public education, focusing on the rights and limitations faced by public employees—especially educators. Through a discussion of legal precedents, policy implications, and real-world scenarios, we’ll examine how speech on social media and other platforms intersects with professional responsibilities.
Key questions include: What protections do teachers have under the First Amendment? Can educators be disciplined or terminated for speech made outside the classroom? How do school districts balance institutional interests with individual rights? Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the legal framework and practical considerations surrounding free expression in public schools.
