Topic — Violence and Justice in the American Southwest

Speaker — Brian Behnken

Brian Behnken explores how police agencies and extra-legal actors perceived and controlled Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the American Southwest between 1830 and 1930. In particular, he explains the formation of self-defense groups and advocacy organizations along with efforts to push state and territorial governments to professionalize law enforcement to halt abuse.
